About

Podman is a command line tool for managing containers, images, volumes and pods, which are groups of containers managed together. It handles OCI and Docker images, building from a Containerfile or Dockerfile, and pushing to registries.

It has a Docker-compatible CLI and needs no manager daemon, which lowers idle resource use. You can run containers without root privileges. Podman runs containers on Linux, and on Mac and Windows through a Podman-managed virtual machine. A REST API is also available. New major or minor releases arrive four times a year.

Highlights

  • Docker-compatible CLI with no manager daemon
  • Runs containers and pods without root
  • Builds, pulls and pushes OCI and Docker images
